Talking, introducing, presenting, attending and chairing

After all the education, the season for presenting and sniffing research starts now. Between this Sunday and June, I will be talking in public quite a few times.

Sunday afternoon 25 March I will be guest in a talkshow Talk of the Townwith host Theodore van Houten in De Oude Veiling in Aalsmeer, discussing and showing silent cinema, including film material by Georges Méliès, used by Martin Scorsese in his recent film HUGO. Other films include actualities of c.1900, flower fields near Haarlem c.1909, and images of the Aalsmeer flower trade from D.J. van der Ven’s NEERLANDS VOLKSLEVEN IN DEN ZOMER.

On Wednesday night 4 April I will introduce a program of early pre-1910 cinema stemming from the Desmet Collection of the EYE Film Institute, a collection recently recognzied by Unesco as World Heritage. Introduction & program will take place at MUMOK (Museum für Moderne Kunst) in Vienna. The program is a double bill and will be followed by a program of classic avant-garde films from the 1920s. Some films within the Desmet program were used by the Dutch avant-garde society Filmliga in the late 1920s.

On Friday 6 April I will join the Collection’s Day at the new EYE building, which will be opened by our Queen on the 4th. One of the films shown is a new restauration of the Pola Negri film THE SPANISH DANCER, which I catalogued in the early 1990s when working at what then still was called Nederlands Filmmuseum. Another film is a recently found and restored Hollandia film: DE BERTHA.

On 25 May I will give a paper on the representation of painters & sculptors in Italian silent cinema, at the conference Cinema of Sensations, in Cluj, Romenia. My first time ever to Romania and to the region of Transsylvania, so looking forward.

On 22 June I will present a paper on the crossmedial representation of Italian diva Lyda Borelli at the Twelfth International Domitor Conference ‘Performing New Media, 1895-1915’ in Brighton, UK. I will also chair a panel ‘Early Cinema (A)live! Sound, Body Performances, and Media Constructions of Presence, with papers by Wolfgang Fuhrmann, Franziska Heller, Daniel Wiegand and Kristina Köhler.
