Cinema Ritrovato

I am looking forward at the next Cinema Ritrovato festival, 27th June- 4th July, in Bologna, Italy. First of all a retrospective of newly restored colour films: the first night at the Piazza Maggiore opens with The Red Shoes by Powell & Pressburger, while the films in piazza close with The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. Also shown is the newly digitally restored version of Visconti’s Senso, just shown in the Classics program at Cannes. I am also looking forward to the colour print of Pandora & The Flying Dutchman by Al Lewin and the colour print of Godard’s Pierrot le fou.

Other programmes include: Frank Capra; the Maciste-films; films of 1909; Vittorio Cottafavi; non-fiction from the Vichy-era; and representation of Jews in Russian and Soviet films. It will be hard to select. The yearly silent film with orchestra at the Teatro Comunale is Feu Mattia Pascal this time. The beautiful, partly experimental film by Marcel L’Herbier and starring Ivan Mozhukin will be shown on Sunday night. On Monday morning, there is a documentary on my dear friend, the late Vittorio Martinelli. For the complete, definitive programme, look here.
